Declining sales tax revenue for cannabis affecting homeless services
Aurora's homeless services face a funding crisis due to a drop in cannabis tax revenue, impacting shelters like Mile High Behavioral Healthcare (MHBHC). The revenue shortage, plunging from $3.9 million to $1.4 million, leaves many programs with insufficient support, jeopardizing services for thousands. MHBHC anticipates a significant impact, with expected cuts to food services and outreach teams. As a result, essential services and staff could be heavily affected.
City leaders are divided, with strategies proposed for addressing the deficit. Despite this, the council has voted to move forward with the budget, scheduled for review at the next council meeting. The decline in marijuana sales statewide continues to exacerbate the financial strain, making it more challenging for shelters to plan for the future.
